Designing for impactful mentor and mentee interactions at Upraised

Designed a coaching sessions feature for Upraised, resulting in improved mentorship satisfaction and  improved mentor/mentee interactions

Background

During the 16-week up-skilling program, learners were assigned a mentor who can coach them through their learning journey by helping them write PRDs, case studies and providing them with industry insights through personal experiences.

Each learner is paired with one mentor, and are provided with 10 coaching sessions. For v1 of this feature learners were matched with the mentor by Program Managers via an internal tool and connected via WhatsApp group chat, where they discussed when they were available for the next call, and then get on a coaching session via Upraised’s learning platform.

Challenges

Since all the mentor-mentee interactions happened off the platform, on WhatsApp and emails, Upraised has no visibility on the quality of these coaching sessions, and learners have a little confidence in the value they are getting out of the coaching sessions due to lack of clarity on how to approach them, specifically regarding what topics are to be discussed on each of these 10 calls.

Collaboration and Timelines

This was one of the projects which lacked detailed feature requests and came in directly in the form of challenges, and had one of the most open canvases. I worked on the project as the only designer spending roughly 3 days on understanding the challenges and scoping it down with the Product Manager, 2 days for wireframing and getting Engineering buy-in on the specifics and 3 days for designing and making things hand-off ready.

Early Exploration

Some of the initial wireframing and inspiration taken from "meeting" concepts with to-dos.

Things that didn't work #1

Booking Flow. One of the challenges that we wanted to resolve was the booking flow for the sessions. Currently, these were happening off the platform through personal messages between the mentor and mentee.

We had a booking flow built for a sister product, and I wanted to incorporate the exact flow in this product. But there was an engineering push back for this due to bandwidth issues, and the time it would take to implement the booking flow (since the sister product had a different code base). We had to push the booking flow to a later iteration of the feature but we did handoff the designs.

Things that didn't work #2

Tentative timelines. Since this was a 16-week program, with a highly structured schedule, I wanted to make use of the deadline dates to give students a reference date by which they should book and complete a given session.

This was one of the ideas, which almost made the final designs, but since ~40% of the students were in a "highly" delayed stage during the program schedule, we decided not to implement this to reduce cognitive and mental stress related to booking and attending these coaching sessions.

Final Designs

Here's all the different states and assets created as a part of this project. Something I didn't stress too much was the mentor side of designs, but we had planned and designed almost the same experience for mentors, barring copy changes and marking agenda as completed.

Results

This project was the last product that I shipped at Upraised and due to that fact, as of writing this I don't have any quantitative data from the project. What I did do as a part of this project was list down various metrics that we had set up to track the health of this feature.
